AMERICANA CELEBRATING OUR CHECKERED PAST AND PRESENT

Please join me this Saturday from 5-8 PM to celebrate the opening of the Hudson Milliner Art Salon

Bring friends, bring frenemies ... we all have a reason to celebrate our checkered past and present in this crazy time we live in.

History is flawed, made for the flawed, by the flawed and this is the struggle I set out to depict.

I start by painting with a narrow color spectrum. Generally it’s teal, white, black and iron oxide. Then I “rust” the canvas, collage it and glaze over with oil. I do collage to include a narrative or just a sound bite. I add “retro”- collage to refer back to where the image came from (a bit like giving a tree roots) and to discretely bring in brash abstract shapes without disrupting the figurative work.

I like to narrow down the composition to three things: depth of field, shadow and light and each individual’s fight with gravity. Sports teams do it as one and each on their own which I find is powerful and well worth depicting. Each body part joins in: your portrait starts with your feet.

I love Americana for its great void. I also love iconography for its weight and it’s long historic shadow.

By marrying the two I intend to throw that long shadow straight into the void and see what happens. Please let me share the outcome with you.

So Bring Your Curious Eye!

Good Housekeeping at the Hudson Milliner

Back in January of last year, the great crew of GOOD HOUSEKEEPING paid a visit to the HUDSON MILLINER  for a spring accessory photo shoot for their March issue. Despite the frigid temperatures outside, the Milliner provided a warm, charming backdrop for the story. This was actually our first time hosting a fashion shoot, and the Milliner was game for it. It’s never looked lovelier!

A Visit to Kinderhook Farm

One of the many wonderful things about visiting Hudson is stopping by the local farms. We visit Kinderhook Farm often where Shannon photographed Nugget the Lamb last year. This weekend he chased chickens around the yard, said hello to Nugget and had the good fortune of being given a farm tour by Anna the shepherd of Kinderhook Farm. While a flock of sheep was being herded in for the evening Anna received a phone call that Suzie the pig was giving birth to Piglets! Luckily Shannon was able to tag along, what an amazing spectacle to witness!

We’re looking forward to many more local farm excursions this summer, check out shanimals.com for more animal adventures!

A beautiful wedding at the hudson milliner

The fabulous hair/makeup artist Sabrina Rowe and I having been working with each other for quite some time now. On a catalogue job in Charleston, SC, she informed me she was looking for a wedding venue to get married to her fiancé, Joe Holdsworth, a still life and food photographer. She was initially looking for a destination, Costa Rica and Jamaica were contenders. This January I asked her to collaborate with me on a shoot in Hudson for my website, and I invited her to stay at the Hudson Milliner. It was love at first sight! She adored the Milliner and Hudson, NY so much, that she knew that her search for a wedding venue had reached its obvious conclusion: The Hudson Milliner!

The wedding took place on 11 March 2015. It was a delight! It was wonderful to get to know Joe better and meet their terrific friends. Originally, the ceremony was to take place in a gazebo in a park around the corner, but snow and mud had them move inside to the Top Hat Suite for their vows. It’s actually quite a lovely room for a small wedding in a pinch! I had a blast photographing the events, and I am amazed any of the photographs of the ceremony were in focus, as I was shooting through many tears!
